Black Girl Magic – IAM KREYOL

I am thankful to be surrounded by wonderful African American women. We have been blessed in our society to witness black women and all of their black girl magic. From business owners and NASA mathematicians, to your everyday stay at home mom and housewives black women have always been a staple in our society. Black women have brought a different dynamic to life as a whole, with the aptitude to be witty and aggressive while maintaining an element of grace in all that they do. This month’s designer feature, Joelle Jean-Fontaine of Boston-based womenswear line, I AM KREYOL, is no different. Though petite in stature, her creative genius knows no bounds and her presence alone can command the attention of even the biggest room. Her fascination with the human body coupled with a childhood love of architecture has led her to draw inspiration from a myriad of things, people and places. Her pieces evoke sentiments of bold structure, intense emotion and free living. Even stronger than her love of artistic expression through fashion is the love she has for her cultural roots. She aspires to return to her native homeland of Haiti with an expanded line that would not only sew seeds of economical prowess into the country, but would also expose it for the ripe fashion hub that she knows it to be.

Although Kreyol is currently a womenswear line, I’ve got good intel there just may be menswear add-on in their near future…maybe! Fortunately enough for me, she’s got ready-to-wear items available for both men and women. Take a look at how I styled this custom-deconstructed Kreyol sweatshirt & some of her other one of a kind couture pieces below. Don’t forget to hit the link for her online store and all her social media contacts. Follow her. Now. And tell her I sent you!

Happy New Year everyone! I truly hope that you guys had a wonderful year filled with beautiful memories, infinite love and new beginnings. I also hope that you guys continue that momentum into this new year. For me last year was a learning experience as I continue to grow. Last year was filled with laughter, tears, enjoyment, struggle and heartbreak, but its never how you start but how you finish! With that being said, I ended the year exactly where I wanted to be, with momentum pushing into the new calendar year. I formed great relationships, ended others, found new opportunities and cut off others. There is never a game plan to this thing we call life, but if you are able to adjust and maneuver, you will always be in great shape. Towards the end of the year I started to realize that I started to be more confident in the things I wanted to accomplish ,  ” Shoot my shot” if you may. The term basically means, to just go for it. You see a girl you like ? Shoot your shot! You see a job posting that may change your life? Shoot your shot! You want to quit your job and start a business? Well, go about it with some strategy but , Shoot your shot! I was more aggressive in my approach and being intentional with everything I did. My stylist ( Doris) and myself incorporated those same values in this look.

In this look, we wanted to bring a winter holiday theme to a different level. From Gala’s to Christmas tree lightings, we wanted to create a look that could be worn on any of your wonderful holiday events. Starting from the top :

Shirt: H&M

Scarf: ASOS

Watch: Michael Kors

Pants: Asos

Shoes: Aldos

As you enter the New year I hope you have a blessed year ahead of you with infinite success, and tremendous happiness!

Always remember, with every situation you encounter this year, make sure you always ” shoot your shot”.

Have a great start to the year.

Can’t believe the end of year is already here! It’s been such a roller coaster, but it seems like every year, life typically spins you upside down. This year I was spun around for good. I took on this new endeavor of blogging and it has opened me up to many different opportunities and different outlooks to life.  It also has opened my eyes to my own style and my confidence level. What you wear is half the battle, your confidence is key to owning your style.

With this look I found out new things about myself that I had never realized, my obsession with fur! I wish you guys could see how much fun I had behind the scenes with the fur, it was hilarious, but I digress. Holiday attire is my favorite type of season, because it brings out different styles of elegance and grace out of everyone. From company holiday parties, to galas, you get your chance during the holidays to strut your stuff. Beautiful dresses and tailored suits, everyone seems to bring out their A game. With this look, my stylist (Doris) had the same idea.

From top to bottom- Doris changed my life, introducing me to the fur piece attached my blazer. The fur collar is a piece from Asos, Asos is an amazing online marketplace that delivers both men and women clothing. One of my favorite online stores. The blazer is an Alfani Slim fit, blue suede piece from Macys. Pocket square and gold lapel are brought to you by one of Boston best consignment stores, Bobby from Boston. By far one of my favorite places to shop, it brings a different understanding of fashion from the past. My pants selection is from J-crew. To wrap up the outfit, I am sporting a rose gold watch from Michael Kors, Shoes from Aldo and socks from Ralph Lauren.

When getting dressed for holiday events, just like any other event, make sure you are truly comfortable in what you are wearing. Confidence, especially in holiday attire, becomes impeccable. Own your look.

Some days I want to be an athlete and wear my sweats/joggers and hoodies, but most of the time I prefer the clean blazer look while I go about my day throughout the city. Being an athlete at heart, I know many former athletes feel the same battles I deal with every morning when it comes this subject. So to deal with my early morning stresses I chose to do both! Well, actually I was styled on this beautiful Sunday by Solitaire, ran by Doris K. I truly believe you can look extraordinary and still be comfortable, crazy right?! So, It was amazing to have someone understand your preference and deliver exactly what you wanted.

On this brisk Sunday morning stroll through Boston I am sporting athletic shoes from PONY ( Product Of New York). This is brand has had longevity and has adapted with the times, which is why I have been so fond of them. For my socks I went with a pair of one of my favorite brands, Happy Socks . To be quite honest,I don’t think I own a pair of regular socks anymore since I came across Happy Socks :). Moving on, I am sporting distressed sweats from Zara. Side note, wanted to share this moment with you guys. Maybe the happiest moments in my life, when Zara created sweatpants I could wear casually. I honestly had tears of joy falling out of my eyes.

As I move along the upper body, I am sporting a brown cardigan from Tommy Hilfiger and a blazer from Ralph Lauren. To wrap up the look, I am sporting a piece of culture and history.  I have on an original Ankara piece from Nigeria.

You can gravitate towards any pieces you see fit your needs, but always make sure you are confident in what you are wearing and comfortable!

See you soon, let me know your thoughts!
