I am thankful to be surrounded by wonderful African American women. We have been blessed in our society to witness black women and all of their black girl magic. From business owners and NASA mathematicians, to your everyday stay at home mom and housewives black women have always been a staple in our society. Black women have brought a different dynamic to life as a whole, with the aptitude to be witty and aggressive while maintaining an element of grace in all that they do. This month’s designer feature, Joelle Jean-Fontaine of Boston-based womenswear line, I AM KREYOL, is no different. Though petite in stature, her creative genius knows no bounds and her presence alone can command the attention of even the biggest room. Her fascination with the human body coupled with a childhood love of architecture has led her to draw inspiration from a myriad of things, people and places. Her pieces evoke sentiments of bold structure, intense emotion and free living. Even stronger than her love of artistic expression through fashion is the love she has for her cultural roots. She aspires to return to her native homeland of Haiti with an expanded line that would not only sew seeds of economical prowess into the country, but would also expose it for the ripe fashion hub that she knows it to be.
Although Kreyol is currently a womenswear line, I’ve got good intel there just may be menswear add-on in their near future…maybe! Fortunately enough for me, she’s got ready-to-wear items available for both men and women. Take a look at how I styled this custom-deconstructed Kreyol sweatshirt & some of her other one of a kind couture pieces below. Don’t forget to hit the link for her online store and all her social media contacts. Follow her. Now. And tell her I sent you!
